Oregon History Comics: Lone Fir Cemetery
A mini-comic written and illustrated by Sarah Mirk was inspired by a tour given by Lone Fir Cemetery Board Member Frank Schaefer, who is featured throughout the piece. The comic was produced as part of Oregon History Comics, a 10-part comic series published by the Dill Pickle Club, telling little-known stories from our state’s history. By celebrating Portland’s underrepresented histories, Oregon History Comics aims to provide a more informed perspective to current politics and public opinion.

Come Together Home
Death. Disinterment. Reburial.
Lone Fir’s Block 14, the first Chinese burial ground in Portland, stands as a fenced-off void of gravel after most of the remains were exhumed and shipped back to China. Sixty years later, Director Ivy Lin follows the footsteps of the missing 1949 shipment in an extraordinary journey from Portland to Hong Kong.
The documentary title was inspired by Matt Sheehy’s song, “Through Your Bones,” written about the Chinese at Lone Fir. Sheehy’s song is part of the (D)early Departed CD that was released in 2008.
