Come for an informal history lesson while enjoying the beauty and tranquility of Lone Fir Pioneer Cemetery in SE Portland.  Friends of Lone Fir Cemetery conducts monthly tours, highlighting Portland’s founders, pioneers, its famous and infamous alike, as well as interesting headstones and monuments.  Come visit this hidden jewel!  Explore 30 acres of mature trees, a very special rose garden and fascinating architecture in this unique place, the only cemetery in Portland listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  Suitable for all ages.  No advance registration required.  Wheel chair accessible by arrangement.  Suggested donation of $10 requested; all proceeds go to headstone restoration and educational programs.  Tours also available at other times by arrangement.  Meet in the center of the cemetery, at the soldiers’ monument.  Cemetery entrance moved to SE 26th between Stark and Morrison Streets.  Bus riders, use Line 15.

Headstone Cleaning Workshops
Saturdays: May 21, June 18, July 16, August 20, September 17
1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Hold history in your hands and have an educational experience in the heart of the city as you learn techniques to properly care for headstones.  The grave markers in our oldest cemeteries can become damaged, darkened and difficult to read.  Well-intentioned people using the wrong materials can seriously damage them.  Friends will share the latest in techniques and methodology, safe cleaning supplies and good ethics involved in caring for these chunks of history.  There will be a demonstration followed by time to clean a marker in Portland’s oldest cemetery.  This is wet, dirty work, so dress accordingly.  You may want to bring a stool.  All cleaning supplies and materials will be provided.  No registration required.  Children welcome.  Free!  Enter on SE 26th off Stark.  Bus riders use Line 15.  Meet at the soldiers’ monument in the middle of the cemetery.

Clean Up Day
Saturday: June 25
10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Help us keep Lone Fir Cemetery looking beautiful for visitors. We are seeking volunteers to rake, collect debris and perform other tasks to support or commitment to stewardship at Lone Fir. Meet at the cemetery entrance on Southeast 26th entrance between Stark and Morrison. Sign in will take place at the Soldiers Monument. Walk straight into the cemetery from the entrance and the monument is on the right-hand side.

This event will take place rain or shine. Dress accordingly. Layers are always good if the weather looks unpredictable. Closed-toed shoes or boots are best. Please bring your own rake and gloves. We will have some on site but the supplies are limited. Bring a lunch if you would like. Friends will have bottled water and a few light snacks.

Wine & Roses
Saturday, July 16
2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Friends of Lone Fir Cemetery and Northwest Rose Historians are honored to offer a tour of the 1920 Maison de Portes thanks to the generous hospitality of homeowner Kristin Benson. This stunningly designed Northwest Portland home captures a 180-degree view from rooms and the terrace. It’s named for the 67 doors original to this beautifully renovated home. Tickets are $20.00 and proceeds from the event support the restoration of Lone Fir Cemetery’s Roses of Old Oregon – one of Oregon’s oldest remaining pioneer rose gardens. For more information and to purchase tickets, please contact nwrosehistorians@hotmail.com or (503) 913-0512.

Seventh Annual Tour of Untimely Departures

Two separate tours of approximately 45 minutes in length will be running constantly throughout the evening to accommodate our maximum capacity of 2,000 visitors. Dress appropriately for the Portland October weather. Tickets are nonrefundable and tours will occur rain or moon-shine. Entrance on SE 26th off Stark. Bus riders, use Line 15. Admission is $10.00 for adults and $15.00 for families of four with two children under the age of 17. No pets or alcohol are allowed in the cemetery and children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

We need your help as we get ready for the biggest event of the year. For more info on how you can volunteer, click here.
