Monument conservation is very important in preserving the history portrayed at Lone Fir Cemetery, Portland’s outdoor history museum. Each year, Friends of Lone Fir partners with Metro to repair larger obelisks as well as resetting seriously broken, damaged stones in danger of disappearing altogether.
With Lone Fir Cemetery located in an urban area with busy thoroughfares on each side, headstones are subject to damage from pollution. Moss accumulation, falling debris from trees and vandalism also affect the tens of thousands of headstones and markers in the cemetery.
Friends of Lone Fir Cemetery volunteers are trained in proper cleaning techniques and repairs that are not harmful. Workshops and work sessions are coordinated throughout the year.
