{"id":101,"date":"2016-10-01T19:57:18","date_gmt":"2016-10-01T19:57:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/testingsite.friendsoflonefircemetery.org\/?page_id=101"},"modified":"2016-10-12T20:13:27","modified_gmt":"2016-10-13T03:13:27","slug":"notable-residents-firefighters","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.friendsoflonefircemetery.org\/?page_id=101","title":{"rendered":"Notable Residents &#8211; Firefighters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Henry Krimbel<\/strong> \u2013 Portland Firefighter Henry Krimbel, of Truck 2, died in the line of duty.\u00a0 While his death occurred October 23, 1932, the injury he sustained on August 16, 1930 would be attributed to his demise.\u00a0 Krimbel fell through the skylight of the Counselor Apartments in downtown Portland.\u00a0 He is buried in the Firefighter\u2019s Section (Block 5) Grave South 145.<\/p>\n<p><strong>James Reed<\/strong> \u2013 Portland Volunteer Firefighter James Reed, of Protection Engine Company #4, died in the line of duty on August 16, 1881.\u00a0 Reed collapsed, suffering an apparent heart attack while his crew pulled a fire engine to a fire. He would die a short time later at the hospital.\u00a0 He is buried in the Firefighter\u2019s Section (Block 5) Grave South 204.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fred Wagner<\/strong> \u2013 Portland Firefighter Fred Wagner, of Truck 2, died in the line of duty on February 28, 1890.\u00a0 Wagner was helping test a newly purchased fire engine when he was struck in the head by a hose nozzle.\u00a0 He never regained consciousness.\u00a0 He is buried in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.friendsoflonefircemetery.org\/LoneFirMap\/lot_lookup.html?block=5&lot=105\">Firefighter\u2019s Section (Block 5) Grave South 105<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-206\" src=\"http:\/\/testingsite.friendsoflonefircemetery.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1844-1-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"img_1844\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.friendsoflonefircemetery.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1844-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.friendsoflonefircemetery.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1844-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.friendsoflonefircemetery.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1844-1-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.friendsoflonefircemetery.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1844-1-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.friendsoflonefircemetery.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_1844-1-1200x1200.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/strong><strong>John G. Hewston<\/strong> \u2013 Portland Firefighter John G. Hewston, of Engine 4, died in the line of duty on October 3, 1892.\u00a0 He was at the scene of a fire in the Kamm Block (1st and Pine) when he was knocked from his ladder by a falling timber.\u00a0 He died of a fractured skull.\u00a0 He is buried in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.friendsoflonefircemetery.org\/LoneFirMap\/lot_lookup.html?block=5&lot=62\">Firefighter\u2019s Section (Block 5) Grave North 62<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emil G. Gustafson<\/strong> \u2013 Portland Fire Alarm Telegraph Electrician Emil G. Gustafson died in the line of duty on March 16, 1916.\u00a0 Gustafson was servicing the telegraph pole at NW 26th and Nicolai Streets when he came in contact with a 10,000 volt electrical line.\u00a0 Life saving efforts at the scene were unsuccessful and he would later be pronounced dead at the hospital.\u00a0 He is buried in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.friendsoflonefircemetery.org\/LoneFirMap\/lot_lookup.html?block=5&lot=100\">Firefighter\u2019s Section (Block 5) Grave North 100<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Francis H. McCormick<\/strong> \u2013 Portland Firefighter Francis H. McCormick, of Truck 1, died in the line of duty on August 15, 1919.\u00a0 McCormick was at a fire at the foot of SW Lincoln Street when a hose line knocked him off of a trestle.\u00a0 He fell about 30 feet, hitting his head.\u00a0 He died later that morning.\u00a0 He is buried in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.friendsoflonefircemetery.org\/LoneFirMap\/lot_lookup.html?block=5&lot=107\">Firefighter\u2019s Section (Block 5) Grave South 107<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Charles A. Ryan<\/strong> \u2013 Portland Firefighter Charles A. Ryan, Truck 3, died in the line of duty on May 20, 1928.\u00a0 He and William McCreery were practicing with the ladder drill team for the upcoming Rose Festival Parade when their safety harness broke, causing both to fall from the top of the ladder to the street below.\u00a0 Ryan died instantly.\u00a0 He is buried in the Firefighter\u2019s Section (Block 5) Grave South 146.<\/p>\n<p><strong>William John McCreery<\/strong> \u2013 Portland Firefighter William John McCreery, Truck 3, died in the line of duty on May 20, 1928.\u00a0 He and Charles A. Ryan were practicing with the ladder drill team for the upcoming Rose Festival Parade when their safety harness broke, causing both to fall from the top of the ladder to the street below.\u00a0 McCreery died in the hospital <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_845177062\"><span class=\"aQJ\">12 hours later<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0 He is buried in the Firefighter\u2019s Section (Block 5) Grave South 143.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Harry Josephson<\/strong> \u2013 Portland Fire Alarm Telegraph Electrician Harry Josephson died in the line of duty on July 23, 1928.\u00a0 Josephson was servicing a telegraph line at SE 51st and Hawthorne when he lost his balance and fell 25 feet from the pole to the street, fracturing his skull.\u00a0 He is buried in the Firefighter\u2019s Section (Block 5) Grave North 105.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Frank L. Kearney<\/strong> \u2013 Portland Firefighter Frank L. Kearney, of Engine 21, died in the line of duty on January 7, 1934.\u00a0 Kearney and his crew were responding to a fire at NW 14th and Flanders when Engine 21 collided with Squad 1 at the intersection of SW 4th and Pine.\u00a0 Nine firefighters were injured and Kearney was killed.\u00a0 He is buried in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.friendsoflonefircemetery.org\/LoneFirMap\/lot_lookup.html?block=5&lot=108\">Firefighter\u2019s Section (Block 5) Grave North 108<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Harry U. Gardner<\/strong> \u2013 Portland Firefighter Harry U. Gardner, of Engine 28, died in the line of duty on <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-202\" src=\"http:\/\/testingsite.friendsoflonefircemetery.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4985-1-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"img_4985\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.friendsoflonefircemetery.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4985-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.friendsoflonefircemetery.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4985-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.friendsoflonefircemetery.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4985-1-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.friendsoflonefircemetery.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4985-1.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>January 19, 1935.\u00a0 Gardner was overcome by smoke when advancing a hose line into a house fire at 2305 NE 51st Avenue.\u00a0 He is buried in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.friendsoflonefircemetery.org\/LoneFirMap\/lot_lookup.html?block=5&lot=109\">Firefighter\u2019s Section (Block 5) Grave North 109<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Karl G. Markstrom<\/strong> \u2013 Portland Captain Carl G.
